The Orange County Fire Authority said a 3-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was attacked by a mountain lion while he was walking with his family within the Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in Lake Forest, California, Monday afternoon.
The incident happened at around 4:15 p.m., authorities said.
According to authorities, the boy was walking with five other family members when a mountain lion came out of nowhere and grabbed him by the neck.
His father hurled a backpack at the lion immediately after the attack, and the animal dropped the child and grabbed the backpack then jumped up a tree.
The kid was taken to a local hospital by first responders with neck injuries. He was listed in stable condition.
The park was evacuated as park officials monitored the mammal. California Fish and Game officials said the animal was euthanized due to the public safety threat.
