Drexel University Professor Suspected of Stealing $185,000 in Grant Funds

Authorities Say Former Drexel University Professor Used Grant Funds on Adult Entertainment

A professor from Drexel University, Philadelphia, was charged for what authorities said is using more than $185,000 in grant funds for adult entertainment among other unauthorized purchases.

Authorities charged 57-year-old Chikaodinaka Nwankpa with theft by unlawful taking and theft by deception.

According to officials, Nwankpa, a former chair of Drexel University’s engineering department, allegedly used funds that were allocated for research on activities that were not related to academic research. The professor is suspected of using more than $185,000 on visits to area adult entertainment venues, sports bars, meals, and purchasing iTunes.

Authorities said a Drexel University audit found that Nwankpa made multiple unauthorized and ‘no receipt’ purchases between 2010 and 2017 and attempted to get reimbursed using research grant funds.

Drexel University police arrested Nwankpa Monday. He was released after posting bail and surrendering his passport.
