8 Children Among 11 People Drown after Migrant Boat Sank near Turkey

The Country is a Key Transit Point for Migrants Traveling to Europe


Eleven people including eight children drowned after a boat carrying migrants sank off Turkey’s coast.

According to local media reports, the incident happened in the waters near Cesme on the Aegean coast opposite the Greek island of Chios.

Eight other people were rescued from the waters by the Turkish Coast Guard who responded to the “screaming sounds” on Saturday night.

The nationalities of the victims were not immediately disclosed.

Turkey is a major transit route of migrants fleeing to Europe, mainly via Greece. The county currently hosts more than four million refugees.

The authorities said more than 60,000 migrants were held by the authorities in 2019 while attempting to cross the Mediterranean.
