67-year-old Sylvia Hatchell, the former women’s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina, was charged in connection to a pedestrian accident that killed an elderly woman.
Police said the former basketball coach was cited for misdemeanor death by vehicle and unsafe movement violation.
Authorities said 89-year-old Betty Colby died Wednesday after she was struck by a vehicle Monday at about noon in the parking lot of a fitness center.
Colby was knocked backward, hitting hit her head on the pavement, authorities said.
Speed or impairment were not believed to be factors in the incident.
Hatchell coached North Carolina from 1986 through 2019. She resigned as the women’s basketball coach in April last year after an external review found that she made ‘racially insensitive’ comments and applied ‘undue influence’ regarding players’ ability to compete through medical issues.
