A United States military base in Kenya was attacked by suspected Al-Shabab fighters early Sunday morning, the US military command for Africa, AFRICOM, confirmed in a statement.
The base, which is used by both the US and Kenyan military, is located in Lamu county near the Kenya-Somalia border.
As per the statement, the attack targeted the Manda Bay airstrip.
In a statement released by the armed group, the attack resulted in “severe casualties on both American and Kenyan troops stationed there.”
However, the claims were not immediately confirmed.
The base is near the dense Boni forest where the militia group has been operating from.
The group is responsible for past attacks in the coastal region, including the recent bus attack that left three people dead.
