13 Killed in Shoot-Out in Panama Jail

Officials Said the Gunfight was Between Members of the Same Gang

At least thirteen people were killed in a gunfight at a Panama jail on Tuesday, the authorities reported.

The officials reportedly recovered five pistols and three AK-47 assault rifles believed to have been smuggled into La Joyita jail.

The shootout is reported to have happened in cell block 14 at about 14:00 local time (19:00 GMT). Inmates in the prison are housed in different blocks according to their gang affiliation.

However, the shootout is reported to have between members of the same gang due to “an internal disagreement”.

President Laurentino Cortizo said a probe would be launched to establish how the guns got into the prison.

No prison official was hurt during the shooting.
