Violent Protests Erupt Following the Passing of New Indian Citizenship Bill

The New Law Blocks Naturalisation For Muslims

Mass protests have erupted in the Indian capital, New Delhi, following the passing of a contentious citizenship bill by the parliament.

The bill grants Indian citizenship to on-Muslim minorities from neighboring countries. Hundreds of college students from New Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) took part in the protests, which ended in clashes.

More than 100 students were injured after the demonstrators clashed with riot police deployed to disperse the protests.

The new law has received international criticism, with many saying the law goes against the spirit of India’s secular constitution.

A Muslim political party and rights group have vowed to challenge the bill in court.
