Russia to Miss Tokyo 2020 Olympics and 2022 World Cup after being Handed Four-Year Ban

Russia's Anti Doping Agency Has 21 Days to Appeal Against the Ban

Russia has been banned from participating in major sporting competitions for the next four years following doping allegations.

The decision to impose the ban was reached unanimously by the World Anti-Doping Agency in a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The means Russia will miss the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, athletes who will prove clean will be allowed to compete under a neutral flag.

The decision comes after Russia’s Anti Doping Agency (Rusada) was declared non-compliant. The domestic agency is reported to have manipulated laboratory data handed over to investigators in January 2019.

Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev has criticized the move saying it was part of “chronic anti-Russian hysteria”.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has said the country might appeal the decision. The country has 21 days to file an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).
