Several people are feared dead after a migrant boat capsized in the Atlantic Ocean, off the shore of Mauritania.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the boat that was carrying 150 people left the Gambia on November 27 before it capsized near the West African country.

The UN’s migration agency said 58 people, including women and children, drowned.

Eighty-three people swam to shore near the northern city of Nouadhibou and are being evaluated by the Mauritanian authorities.

IOM said the overcrowded boat was unseaworthy and was running low on fuel when it overturned.

The Gambian government has not commented on the incident.
