Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone Dies Aged 101

Nakasone Led the Country Between 1982 and 1987

Former Japan’s prime minister Yasuhiro Nakasone has died at the age of 101, a top ruling party official confirmed on Friday.

Mr. Nakasone led Japan between 1982 and 1987 and was a great ally of former US president Ronald Reagan. He is remembered for promising to build an unsinkable “aircraft carrier” for US forces to help them defeat the Soviet Union.

Nakasone was also the first Japanese prime minister to make an official visit to South Korea. The visit was a significant step towards the mending of fences between the two countries. Japan had colonized South Korea from 1910 to 1945.

He is also remembered for making radical economic reforms, including the privatization of state-owned corporations, such as the railway, tobacco, and telecommunications companies.
