Several People Killed after 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Albania

150 Other People Were Wounded and Were Being Treated


Several people are feared dead after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Albania on Tuesday morning.

The powerful quake struck at about 4 am local time (03:00 GMT) and shook the capital, Tirana, and its surrounding neighborhood. Several houses were destroyed in the quake, burying several people under the rubble.

According to a report by the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was located 19 miles west of Tirana and had a shallow depth of only 6 miles.

Tuesday’s quake was the second reported in the region in two months.

The authorities said the bodies of two women were recovered from the rubble the northern village of Thumane while a man was confirmed dead in the town of Kurbin.

The defence ministry spokeswoman, Albana Qehajaj, said three other people were killed after a building collapsed in the city of Durres.

More than 150 people were injured in the incident and were being treated.

The European Union, the US and neighboring nations have offered support to mitigate the disaster.
