China’s Jiangcungou landfill that has been in operation for about 25 years is already full. The dumpsite which is located in Shaanxi Province was designed to receive 2,500 tonnes of garbage per day but is currently taking 10,000 tonnes of waste per day.
The massive landfill is the size of 100 football fields and is one of the largest in the country and was designed to operate up to 2044.
The landfill is 150 meters deep, spans an area of almost 700,000 square meters and serves more than 8 million citizens.
China has a population of 1.4 billion citizens and is one of the world’s biggest polluters.
The country has since built a new incineration plant with four others under construction, expected to be opened by 2020. The plants are expected to Chinaprocess 12,750 tonnes of waste a day.
