Security forces in DR Congo have killed Hutu rebel leader Musabimana Juvenal in an operation on Saturday in North Kivu province.
According to a statement by the army, Juvenal, also known as Jean-Michel Africa and his four bodyguards, were killed after an intense fight at Rutshuru.
The army said the operation to eliminate armed local and foreign groups in the region is ongoing.
Juvenal was the leader of the Hutu Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) that was formed after the 1994 Rwandan genocide that left more than 800,000 dead.
Rwandan Hutu refugees who fled to the neighboring DR Congo formed FDLR.
The killing of Juvenal comes barely a month after the killing of FDLR commander Sylvestre Mudacumura. An international arrest warrant had been issued against Mudacumura.
Five FDLR members were arrested early last month following an attack in Northern Rwanda that left five dead.
