Australian boxer Dwight Ritchie, 27, has died after a training session, his promoter Jake Ellis announced.
“It is with great sadness and shock to announce ‘the Fighting Cowboy’ Dwight Ritchie sadly passed away doing what he loved,” he said.
The father-of-three only lost twice in his 21-fight career including the recent loss to Tim Tszyu as they contested for the IBF Australasian super-welterweight title in August.
Ritchie had been sparring with Michael Zerafa in Melbourne shortly before his sudden death. Zerafa is preparing for a rematch with former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn.
Ritchie’s death comes barely a month after the death of American boxer Patrick Day last month who succumbed to a brain injury in a fight against Charles Conwell.
