Brazil’s Ex-President Luiz Lula da Silva Released from Jail

Lula Had Been Jailed after Allegedly Receiving Kickbacks from Contractors

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the former president of Brazil, has been released from jail after a Supreme Court ruling.

The release order came a day after the Brazilian Supreme Court overturned a law that made it mandatory to imprison convicts who lose their first appeal.

Lula was jailed for eight years in 2018 after being found guilty of receiving kickbacks from engineering firms in return for government contracts.

Lula was received by his supporters and members of his Workers Party after walking out of prison.

While addressing his supporters, Lula called for a rally in Sao Paulo on Saturday ahead of his planned national tour. He promised to fight to establish his innocence.
