Southern Mexico & Mexico City 2010 Earthquake Today – Just today southern Mexico areas were rocked by an incredibly strong earthquake. Some witnesses to the unfortunate event recount feeling enormous shakes in the capital of the county. However, no reports of major damage to buildings or any causalities have come in yet. It appears that most foundations help up strong to the massive 6.4 magnitude earthquake that swept over Mexico at 2:22 a.m. local time. The location of the devastating earthquake was about 42 kilometers northeast of Pinotepa Nicional which is within the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The location is just 355 kilometers south-southeast of Mexico City. The earthquake only struck within at 10 kilometer radius but it impacted the earth close to 6.2 miles deep underground. Mexico’s Seismological Service said that the earthquake was shallow and didn’t affect a very wide area.

The United States Geological Survey was able to gather their own data on the earthquake. Our records show a massive 6.5 on the Richter scale. Rodrigo Javier Aguiar is the head of BNO News’ office in Mexico City. He was in the capital during the time of the earthquake and he reported feeling very heavy shaking for several seconds. He released this statement to reporters, “I was about to sleep when I felt a small movement, but then everything started to sway. I was unable to walk and it lasted about 30 seconds.”

All earthquakes are a dangerous situation and Aguiar also said that helicopters were even called into fly over the city and account for any damage that may have occurred. Power outages were reported all throughout the area but there were no reports of any significant damage or causalities.
