Flag Day 2010:What Is Army Birthday? – Today across the United States Americans will be waving their flags to celebrate national Flag Day. It is not yet a national holiday, but is still celebrated throughout the country. The holiday is celebrated in remembrance of the creation of the American flag, which was created by the Continental Congress in 1777. The resolution stated that the flag would have 13 stripes on it. Seven of the stripes would be red with six of them white. In the corner of the flag, 13 stars were placed in a blue area. This represented a constellation and later was added to as many more states entered the union.
No one is quite sure who was responsible for designing the first American flag. They have narrowed it down to two separate people who were involved in the process. One was the New Jersey Congressman at the time, Francis Hopkinson, and the other was Betsy Ross, who was a seamstress from Philadelphia.
The colors on the flag are meant to represent different things.
The red stripes on the flag are meant to represent hardiness and valor. White stands for purity, and blue represents vigilance and justice. The flag is still flown in these colors today, and is celebrated on Flag Day each year, in the remembrance of the creation of the flag. There have been a number of different stories as to how the flag originated, so it can be hard to decipher fact from fiction when it comes to the creation of the nations flag.
