In the context of all this discussion. I would like to shed some light the best I can to help Venus understand the meaning of that question no matter how too late it is because US has a harsh, challenging culture.

The question was asked:

“what is the one big mistake that you did in your life, and what did you do to make it right?”

My daughters opinion (she is Filipina, grew up here and an intellectual) According to her, Venus’ answer could have been like this…

“When I was young and growing up, I was teased and called ugly by kids in my neighborhood. My parents were very protective of me. My mistake was I did not see my diverse background as positive because I was young. Then I worked hard as a teen at educating myself to overcome my frustration to show them that I am someday going to be accepted. Slowly my diversed background worked to my advantage and I gained confidence. And I did just that and guess what… all my hard work payed off and that is why I am here today” (educating herself and discovering her diverse background to work for her advantage is what she did “do to make it right”)

This is humbling and human.
This is what they would have wanted to hear from her because this is her REAL platform. This was what her real life story was all about and the judges knows it.
This could be one of the many answers they waited for.

There might be some other questions that she will be asked by the people in the big wide world on her travels if she was to become the Miss Universe,
Miss Mexico will be using interpreters (she will not have a hard time finding)

Like:
1. What is your opinion about Gay marriages (without offending the gay community)
2. Your opinion on abortion (without offending the pro-choice)
3. What is your opinion about a black President (without offending Obama)
etc, etc.
4. Who is your famous female role model (without mentioning the Virgin Mary)

I love Ma Venus Raj. I want to think of her as our daughter. She need to have to learn a lot from Miss America and it’s OK to ask. She will teach her well because they both have Mid-Asian & Eastern genes.

Learn more about this US culture and the way they use their language not just learning to speak it. Because speaking it is not enough. They tend to describe something negative as something positive, which I think can be confusing. Like the word “Big Mistake” is not really a mistake or wrong doing but some kind of weakness.

Here is also a dictionary where young people store all the contemporary slang words.
It’s called URBAN DICTIONARY. I accidentally found this while surfing for dictionary words. Its very helpfull but sometimes offending but it’s all there!

To Ma Venus Raj. Enjoy the journey. You have all the time in the world. I am in the sunset of my life and I wish I could do more. I envy your youth and beauty and I am not the only one. A lot of people admire you and you can do a lot of good for the youth because you have a gift of honesty, love and strenght, you will be going very far. Meet the right people and don’t let anyone take advantage of you or put you down.

She was truthful and that is what matters. You want her to lie? The best thing to do is give the same question for all like they used to do. Besides what if her biggest mistake was having an abortion? That is a very personal question – does she have to tell the entire world about this?

The Miss Universe 2010 Organizer lost a unique beauty and regal new Miss U in Miss Venus Raj of the Philippines. She could have been a good material to write about over blank-looking and un-exciting Ms Mexico. Ms Raj also transgresses two countries—the Philippines and India. From among the finalists of the usual big “B’s” beauties “— BIG (unkept) HAIR, BIG #### and BIG BUTT— which are typical of the Latina, Caribbean and Caucasian beauties— Venus, stood out as fresh, neat, confident, polished, lean, beautiful and regal ( according to Ms U owner Donald Trump, who probably bite his lips and reprimand his staff why that stupid and odd personal question was there among current events thrown to the four other finalists).America and the world would have wanted Venus as the new Ms U because America wants something new. I myself gag with all these same kind of beauty stereotypes coming from the Ms U. It is so predictable. Give them the Big B’s , and they will get the places. But went wrong?BRING BACK THE SOUND PROOF BOX. Ms U should bring back their SOUND PROOF cubicles and ask the same question to the finalists like they did in the past. It is fair play. It was, and will be, their BRAND IDENTITY anyway. It was a Ms U innovation that no other beauty pageant contests ever have had. Who ever introduced that the judges ask the contestants their questions like in job interviews, should be junked. Some judges can not even pronounce and read their questions properly with emphasis and clarity.

In US the espression “big mistake” is common.It’s an expression. It’s like saying, “using wax for my leg was a big mistake I ever did in my life”. This is the kind of “big mistake” the judge was looking for. Unfortunately, in other countries it would sound like some serious matters.
That question was not smart to be asked to foreigners, it a MAJOR, MAJOR STUPID QUESTION!!!!!UNLESS THEY REALLY WANT HER OUT.
In my opinion they know her answer was fine. But the crown have to be worn by a Latina because there are a lot of
Hispanic issues in this country. Guys, its POLITICS, sorry.
Now, they plan to make a MOVIE out of the contest. CAPITALIST, Las Vegas economy needs to improve. Miss Universe contest is money making business. See you next year.
MA. VENUS RAJ is the true MISS UNIVERSE and MISS JAMAICA the first runner-up and Miss Mexico the 4th runner-up.
how about that. By-the-way Miss Mexico can speak fluent English (watch The Today Show interview). Next time bring an interpreter.

Apparently, poll and audience favorite Venus Raj thought out her answer to William Baldwin in native language (Tagalog), and then articulated it in second language (English). Psycholinguists will confirm that a non-native speaker, even if intermediate in level, may hardly be able to respond with spontaneous eloquence in second language during a time-sensitive instance at a public stage event. The hard lesson learned is that, even if a Philippine beauty candidate can speak English, she should opt to avail of interpreter service, as how English-speaking Miss Mexico did. After all, Miss Universe is not a public speaking contest — it is a beauty contest! Still, making it to Top 5 in hand-me-down gowns was no minor, minor feat. So here’s my sincere “MAJOR, MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS TO MISS RAJ!”

well, there’s nothing wrong with her answer as long as she was then transparent enough….we are not on her shoes, and we have no right to give any words of discrimination to somebody who has not experienced that major blunder, who, knows, Venus had really had it, and did never ever commit that in her plenary life……anyway, the question was about just a “big mistake”,,,,well, she absolutely retorted it factually,,,,,because, though, she has a mistake for we are all entitled to that, but Venus never count it as her “major mistake” for what she had was only “Minor mistakes” not the former one…..thanks……

Everyone makes mistakes, no matter how poor or how rich you are. Her answer was cute but held no weight because it sounded like she was flustered and just couldn’t think of anything to say.

She didn’t answer the question. I’m glad she made it to the top but I’m sure there’s one thing she did or didn’t do in her life that she regrets.

Eh, she didn’t win anyway so whatever. They gave the crown to another pretty girl who did not answer the question in classic Ms. Universe fashion.
