As a dominant superpower, the United States has won wars hot and cold; our military has advanced the cause of freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan and kept authoritarian powers like Russia and China in check. Granted, Palin parsed President Obama’s words. The full quote is: But what we can make sure of is, is that we are constantly present, constantly engaged, and setting out very clearly to both sides our belief that not only is it in the interests of each party to resolve these conflicts but it’s also in the interest of the United States. It is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them. And that ends up costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure. Obama’s point? Whether we like it or not, we’ll get pulled into conflicts which cost America money. NOT whether we like it or not, we’re a strong military power. There’s a great difference between the two sentiments. Missing that difference either means that a) Ms. Palin is parsing together words for dramatic Facebook content; or b) Ms. Palin is unable to comprehend the difference.
