Maria Venus Raj : Miss Philippines 2010 Answer – Miss Universe 2010 – Miss Philippines was a huge hit last night during the Miss Universe 2010 pageant. Unfortunately, she gave an answer during the final question that may have eliminated her from the competition. The question was what the biggest mistake of her life was, and what she would do to correct the mistake. She answered by saying that in her 22 years, she had never made a mistake that she considered to be “major.” While she may have been being honest in her own eyes, that certainly was not the answer that the judges were looking for. If anything, she should have made something up.

Miss Philippines 2010 Venus Raj

You would think that she would have some sort of similar answer prepared for the question, as it is a common one in these types of competitions. The fans and audience loved her, but she did not give the judges the type of answer that they are looking for. Most of her answers were accompanied by some sort of laugh, and she was very charismatic on stage. Her presentation was as good as could be, but her answers to the questions were sub-par and could have been better. She certainly needed to be sharper if she wanted to secure a victory in the Miss Universe competition.

She went on to say that her confidence and her family were the reasons behind her never having made a mistake. In a competition as large as Miss Universe, you should never have to explain your answers and they should be very straightforward.

  1. It’s hard for some people to understand and believe that there are folks from a culture that do not usually get into MAJOR trouble because they have families, relatives and friends who surround them, care for them, truly love them and lead them on the right path with good values. This situation is very hard for other people to accept. Whether you tell the truth or not is not what is important for them, what matters are their stereotyped, but misguided answers that they want to hear. We love you, Miss Philippines and Congratulations! The mere fact that you’re one of the finalists is by itself a big achievement!

    • I too was shocked by her reply and knew that it would hurt her chances of winning the crown. The points brought here are valid; however, I believe the real problem was in the way she presented the fact she had not made a major mistake in her life. Perhaps if she had explained that she was still young at age 22 and have been fortunate enough not to have been exposed to any major situations so far due to her upbringing but that she may face challenges ahead, she would not come across as overly confident; I think looking a bit more serious too (it was a serious question) may have helped. She really had a lot of charisma and confidence on stage and great beauty; I think she would have made a great Miss Universe. On another matter, I did not think much of Miss Mexico’s response to when she became Miss Universe when asked how she felt – “I don’t know” ??

  2. MISS PHILIPPINES – VENUS RAJ GAVE AN HONEST ANSWER AND IT COSTS HER THE CROWN

Let me enlighten you as to why?

Venus Raj lives a simple and poor life. She lives in a province, sort of your rural America or the boonies. The house she lives in is a simple thatched-roof hut made of bamboo and wood, located in the middle of the rice paddies. Her immediate support are her family, friends, and relatives. She was born illegitimate. In the Philippine society, it is still a stigma. She strives to do her best to study hard and succeed in life. She graduated Cum Laude in Communication Arts and managed to find a job as Information Assistant in a governmental agency in her province. While doing that, she helps her mother, a farmer, buys land on installment basis. Her goal is to help her mother and family improve the quality of their lives and lift from the life of poverty.

Going back to the question posed by Mr. Baldwin, “what is the one big mistake that you did in your life, and what did you do to make it right?” When Venus answered, “In my 22 years of existence, there is nothing major – major problem that I have done in my life. Because I’m very confident about my family and the love they are giving me. So thank you so much…”

IF YOU ANALYZE HER ANSWER, SHE IS TELLING THE AUDIENCE THE TRUTH! WHEN DOES TRUTH BECOMES A LIABILITY?

In her 22 years of life, she did not commit a ONE BIG MISTAKE WORTH UNDOING OR REGRETTING! SHE THANKS HER FAMILY BECAUSE THEY ARE HER GUIDE AND SUPPORT.

Let’s see…where could she make a big mistake?

DID SHE SLEEP AROUND AND CATCH HIV/STD DISEASES? – No, she did not. Remember, she lives in a rural area in a conservative Catholic society, acting whorish is a big NO NO!
DID SHE GET PREGNANT AND HAVE AN ABORTION? – NO, she did not. She is one wholesome girl. Her family watched, protected, and nurtured her. She can’t escape the watchful eyes of her 4 brothers. Suitors will have a hard time to be near her. If there is going to be one, he will be talking to the whole family instead of talking privately with her. That’s the way life in rural Philippines. Everybody knows everybody, and everybody knows what everybody is doing.
DID SHE SMOKE OR DID DRUGS? – NO, she did not. She came from a poor family. She has no means of buying it. These bad habits are only enjoyed by the wretched people, who are typically shunned by Philippine conservative society.
DID SHE FAIL IN SCHOOL? – No, she did not. She excelled in school. Graduated Cum Laude.
DID SHE COVET A MARRIED MAN? – No, she did not. She doesn’t have a boyfriend at the present time.
IS SHE A BAD DAUGHTER? – No, she is not. In fact, she helps her mother and family improve their lives.

OVERALL, VENUS IS A WHOLESOME, GOOD GIRL, WHO GREW UP IN A RURAL CONSERVATIVE SOCIETY, PROTECTED, NURTURED, AND WATCHED BY HER LOVE ONES AND DID NOT EXPERIENCE BIG MISTAKES IN LIFE. SHE LEAD A CAREFUL AND NORMAL LIFE THAT IS TOTALLY OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU EXPECT OF A LIFE OF A YOUNG LADY IN THE MODERN WESTERN SOCIETY.

UNFORTUNATELY, SHE WAS JUDGED BY A PANEL OF MODERN SOCIETY JUDGES AND AUDIENCES WHO CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT THEY WERE HEARING. TRUTH IS INDEED STRANGER THAT FICTION. BUT JUDGES, BY VIRTUE OF BEING A JUDGE, SHOULD ALSO LOOK AT FACTS AND TRUTHS, NOT SOME GENERALIZED OPINION THAT SOUNDS GOOD TO THE POLITICALLY CORRECT. VENUS ANSWER WAS FACTUAL AND BRAVE, AND SHE SHOULDN’T BE LAMBASTED FOR TELLING THE TRUTH, AND IT SHOULDN’T COST HER THE CROWN.

VENUS COMING FROM A POOR EXISTENCE AND MAKING IT INTO THE WORLD SHOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR PEOPLE LIVING AND BORN INTO POVERTY, WHICH APTLY APPLIES TO THE 70% OF THE WORLD POPULATION, AND FOR THOSE BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK. SHE CAN BE A GREAT MESSENGER TO THE WORLD THAT:

    1. THERE IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF BEING BORN OF OUT WEDLOCK. IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. LIFE OFFERS REDEMPTION AND MANY POSSIBILITIES.
    2. BEING POOR IS NOT A HINDRANCE TO SUCCEED IN LIFE.
    3. STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION AND OF FINISHING COLLEGE.
    4. HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF MORAL CHARACTER AND A GIRL’S WHOLESOME IMAGE
    5. FAITH OF A CREATOR WITH UNLIMITED GIFTS TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE ~NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD. HE CAN USE A MESSENGER FROM THE LOWLY AND POOR AND EXALT HER TO NEW HEIGHTS. SHE CAN BE A LIVING TESTAMENT OF GOD’S GRACE AND POWER THAT HE CAN DO ANYTHING AND CAN CHANGE LIVES.
    6. GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR YOUNG GIRLS ~BE VIRTUOUS~BE HONEST ~HONOR THE PARENTS~EXCEL IN SCHOOL~HELPS FAMILY, ETC.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND A RARE AND SPECIAL GIRL LIKE VENUS RAJ?

MR. TRUMP AND THE PANEL OF JUDGES FAILED TO DO THEIR DUE DILIGENCE. THEY FAILED TO DO THEIR JOB AND IN FAILING TO DO THEIR JOB, THEY MISSED THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR A GREAT MESSENGER TO THE WORLD, WHO IS CONVINCINGLY BELIEVABLE TO THE WORLD, BECAUSE SHE IS A LIVING AND BREATHING PROOF OF A POOR GIRL BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK WHO OVERCOMES HARDSHIPS, OBSTACLES, AND CHALLENGES IN LIFE. JUST LOOK AT HER LIFE … AND HOW FAR SHE GOES.

IF THE MISS UNIVERSE ORGANIZATION WANTS TO BE RELEVANT NOW AND IN THE FUTURE, THEY SHOULD SEND THE RIGHT MESSENGER TO THE WORLD, WHO WOULD INSPIRE THE WORLD BY EXAMPLE, AND WHO CAN WALK THE TALK. A PRETTY FACE WON’T CUT IT ANYMORE.

    • elle. take a deep breath. relax. inhale… exhale geeeez…

so what if she didn’t win. so what if her answer sucked. admit the fact that she is beautiful and her answer sucked. end of story.

    • ELLE, you are absolutely right! She was truthful and her reality is not most of the world’s reality. She is a special person and rare to find. I wish every daughter/child is like her. She could have elaborated something, though since she had few seconds left.. like, “If I ever make some mistakes, I would take responsibility, correct them, and move on..”, something like that. SHE DID GREAT OVERALL!

    • You should send that post to Diane Sawyer coz I watched the news yesterday and they talked about what happened to Venus Raj. I really like what you wrote and I think the world need to know the real Venus Raj…:)

    • you are absolutely right…although i believe that the judges didn’t fail to do their jobs because it is to follow the boss.mr trump is clever enough not to choose miss venezuela again becauce he was earning a lot of intrigues but still another latina for his miss universe..he must really have eyes for latin beauties..

    • ELLE,
Your piece is well written! It ought to be shared with the Miss Universe Organization for future reference, and published in major dailies in the Philippines, at the very least.

In a country searching for role-models, where beauty -queens reign in people’s hearts, Venus is really a rare find
      Nestor

    • WELL SAID ,,,ELLE YOUR ONE SMART WOMAN,,WHO GOT IT ALL OUT,,WHOM A LOT OF FILIPINOS= ARE THINKING AND CAN’T JUST SAY IT,,,THANK YOU FOR SUMMARIZING IT ALL FOR ALL OF US FILIPINOS….

  3. Mabuhay! First and foremost, congratulations to Venus Raj with a success of representing the Philippines. I just believe that everyone make mistakes and failiure is what you’ll go through first before you become a winner. She definitely deserved the 4th runner up title.

  4. thank you for your complement miss elle… we are proud to have miss venus as our representative in that particular pageant… God bless miss venus raj…

  5. Most observers said that she wrongly answered the question. But we should consider as well that we have different opinions and response to every query.Maybe for the rest of us, it ain’t the best answer, but for her it was the best and the truth as far as her experiences is concern esp in the midst of that situation. Take note that the world was watching and they just simply counting your mistakes for they already consider you as always the best…I salute you Venus Raj -job well done!

  6. well all i can say is bonggang bonggang major major talaga wow…sayang talaga she cud make it sana pero naman kasi cases or times like that she cud have fake it or invent stories its pageantry where instantaneous things surely has an impact…yeah theres nothing wrong wid being real…but its a q and a time…u cannot have an underlying answers to yur answer its like wat u hear is wat u get…u cannot explain furthermore…i appreciate all the comments here especially that sumone who talks about wat venus life is where she come from and so on….kaso the judges is expecting sumthing out from the question for us yeah we understand that its her its her being real..but for some…shes not..kasi no people na walang problem so sana kaht small details ang nasagot nya don simple things…na lang sana…well…anyways…she still bring honor to our country..and being in the top five is such a major major bonggang bongga na achievement na!!

  7. Maria Venus Raj did not make a mistake. She was honest and thrilled to be present in that crowd and doing the best she can to make the entire Filipino community proud and show the world that there is a country and culture in this universe where women are still respected and nortured growing-up beautiful and well prepared to face the challenges and embracing life on this earth while still keeping their poise, beauty and sanity.

Keep it up Ma.VENUS Raj. you are the THE BEAUTIFUL GODDESS OF THE UNIVERSE. YOU ARE OUR ROLE MODEL.

We are your team. You are wonderful and you are real.
Don’t go a-changin’. We love you just the way you are.
WE ARE VERY VERY PROUD OF YOU.

    MABUHAY KA!!!

  8. I agree and disagree, in some other comments for the answer of Ms. Venus.

In my opinion she answered the questioned, as she doesn’t care what the people will think of her answers, because she already accepted she was in the final five and by heart, already a winner out of 83 participants, and she was chosen among it.

But if this is a one moment in a lifetime contest,or a pageant… My question is
didn’t she made a mistake in her entire life? as the questioned was asked –
“what is the one big mistake that you did in your life,
and what did you do to make it right?”

Either is a minor or major mistake… it is still a mistake…I know no one is perfect and we all commit mistake.

Anyways congratulations to Ms.Maria Venus Raj, you made our country proud. Mabuhay Philippines.. God bless you.

    • OMG..i can’t believe that telling the truth is gonna be a big mistake.what will happen to the entire mankind if everyone has to tell lies just to be on top??this isn’t a good example to the children..anyways..miss universe beauty pageant is all about politics and business decorated with beautiful ladies..BTW, the boss had already choosen the winner before the judges…open your eyes to the reality..it’s how it goes in this crazy world..tho’ i can’t help but feel sorry for miss raj and all i wish for her is to move on…your family and friends are always there for you.

  9. I guess Ms Philippines finally made a MAJOR mistake of her life answering the question. You have to be quick witted in these competition. So many people were disappointed, I would have loved her to win. I have to say she was a little too confindent with herself, she forgot to be bright.

    • Try to find the ABC Video with Diane Sawyer. They talked about that same question. Even Ex President Bush, President Obama and other smart people couldn’t find a word to answered that question… They had the same questions to the finalist before but this year was different, hmmm..

  10. Miss Raja answer is rigth, the only case is , she did not support her message clearly. If I were her, i could say that , althought misfortune is part of ones life , but in my case, i dont experience any big problem during my 22 years of existing due to the guidance of our Lord, whenever i made my decision, i need to pray for wisdom from our creator, and i do believed God will guide me the same to the rest of my life. i encourage everyone to ask for wisdom of any decision you want to make. I believed this the right support to her argument

  11. to those who agreed with her answer, she didn’t say the “TRUTH” because everyone makes mistakes, like Gloria Diaz said, she could have said something about not looking for her biological father although it is a sensitive subject to talk about, did our Ms Venus Raj forget she was on a MAJOR network TV looking for some MAJOR drama answers

  12. Well past is past although I really believed that she will be the 3rd Miss Universe from the Philippines but perhaps if only she analyzed the question by heart she should gave a convincing and bright answer then judges will give 9.9 rating. Anyway congratulations Ms. Raj, we are proud of you. Mabuhay Pinoy…..

  13. Miss Raj was not implying that she was perfect and has not committed any mistakes in her life. What she was trying to say was in her 22 years of existence, she has committed mistakes along the way but does not consider them major faults as she was guided by her family all throughout. She was asked to cite a BIG mistake that she did in her life so she couldn’t think of any major blunder that she did so her response was alright. She just failed to elaborate her answer further probably because she was tensed and nervous. It’s just not easy to answer a question in front of so many people especially if it’s a personal one not to mention that she had to cite a mistake, she had to be careful that it wouldn’t be a minus points for her (as compared to the questions asked to the other contestants which only required their opinions on a particular topic) plus the thought that you were being watched worldwide was just nerve-wracking.

  14. what’s wrong with being honest??does she have to lie to win??anyways,as long as mr trump is the boss..politics and business will never be out of the competition..he was good enough to put miss raj on the final five because venus is really a beauty but putting her and the philippines on the top??what’s his merit??

  15. for me, MARIA VENUS RAJ just answered it right, first is that, not all pilipinos live in harmony, wealthy, and easy life like some pilipinos did, she lived her 22 life struggling in the province, since it is very different from city, the culture, the people and invironment really differs from the city life, in order to achieve and survive, as probinsyana, she tried to do her best for everything she’ve done, plus she is graduate in college with honor, and it is known how hard it is to graduate with honor, for someone like her, with self-determination and perseverance, i think that symbolize the people who live her life in a simple way..a probinsyana…simpleng tao pero rokista….

  16. This topic for Ms. Venus, will never end…
There is a quote..Do not cry over spilled milk.

We cannot go back to the event and wish she said something like this or like that, like trying to dictate her thoughts at that moment. Just remember its a 30 second answer, who would not get nervous? Even Ms. Venus herself in a news interview got nervous and went blank for that question.
The question that was asked to her was a very personal one rather than the other contestant.
You have a choice in this matter, either to broadcast it to the whole world to please the judges… or just be yourself?

So all those who disagree to her answers, let go of it.

We have to end this crab mentality. We should support one another rather than criticize one another.

The one big mistake all people have is not putting ourselves to others shoes… We have to broaden our mind.

This will be my last comment in this issue..
    I hope everyone does also.

  17. Everyone makes mistakes, no matter how poor or how rich you are. Her answer was cute but held no weight because it sounded like she was flustered and just couldn’t think of anything to say.

She didn’t answer the question. I’m glad she made it to the top but I’m sure there’s one thing she did or didn’t do in her life that she regrets.

Eh, she didn’t win anyway so whatever. They gave the crown to another pretty girl who did not answer the question in classic Ms. Universe fashion.

  18. well, there’s nothing wrong with her answer as long as she was then transparent enough….we are not on her shoes, and we have no right to give any words of discrimination to somebody who has not experienced that major blunder, who, knows, Venus had really had it, and did never ever commit that in her plenary life……anyway, the question was about just a “big mistake”,,,,well, she absolutely retorted it factually,,,,,because, though, she has a mistake for we are all entitled to that, but Venus never count it as her “major mistake” for what she had was only “Minor mistakes” not the former one…..thanks……

  19. Apparently, poll and audience favorite Venus Raj thought out her answer to William Baldwin in native language (Tagalog), and then articulated it in second language (English). Psycholinguists will confirm that a non-native speaker, even if intermediate in level, may hardly be able to respond with spontaneous eloquence in second language during a time-sensitive instance at a public stage event. The hard lesson learned is that, even if a Philippine beauty candidate can speak English, she should opt to avail of interpreter service, as how English-speaking Miss Mexico did. After all, Miss Universe is not a public speaking contest — it is a beauty contest! Still, making it to Top 5 in hand-me-down gowns was no minor, minor feat. So here’s my sincere “MAJOR, MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS TO MISS RAJ!”

  20. In US the espression “big mistake” is common. It’s an expression. It’s like saying, “using wax for my leg was a big mistake I ever did in my life”. This is the kind of “big mistake” the judge was looking for. Unfortunately, in other countries it would sound like some serious matters.
That question was not smart to be asked to foreigners, it a MAJOR, MAJOR STUPID QUESTION!!!!!UNLESS THEY REALLY WANT HER OUT.
In my opinion they know her answer was fine. But the crown have to be worn by a Latina because there are a lot of
Hispanic issues in this country. Guys, its POLITICS, sorry.
Now, they plan to make a MOVIE out of the contest. CAPITALIST, Las Vegas economy needs to improve. Miss Universe contest is money making business. See you next year.
MA. VENUS RAJ is the true MISS UNIVERSE and MISS JAMAICA the first runner-up and Miss Mexico the 4th runner-up.
how about that. By-the-way Miss Mexico can speak fluent English (watch The Today Show interview). Next time bring an interpreter.

  21. The Miss Universe 2010 Organizer lost a unique beauty and regal new Miss U in Miss Venus Raj of the Philippines. She could have been a good material to write about over blank-looking and un-exciting Ms Mexico. Ms Raj also transgresses two countries—the Philippines and India. From among the finalists of the usual big “B’s” beauties “— BIG (unkept) HAIR, BIG #### and BIG BUTT— which are typical of the Latina, Caribbean and Caucasian beauties— Venus, stood out as fresh, neat, confident, polished, lean, beautiful and regal ( according to Ms U owner Donald Trump, who probably bite his lips and reprimand his staff why that stupid and odd personal question was there among current events thrown to the four other finalists).America and the world would have wanted Venus as the new Ms U because America wants something new. I myself gag with all these same kind of beauty stereotypes coming from the Ms U. It is so predictable. Give them the Big B’s , and they will get the places. But went wrong?BRING BACK THE SOUND PROOF BOX. Ms U should bring back their SOUND PROOF cubicles and ask the same question to the finalists like they did in the past. It is fair play. It was, and will be, their BRAND IDENTITY anyway. It was a Ms U innovation that no other beauty pageant contests ever have had. Who ever introduced that the judges ask the contestants their questions like in job interviews, should be junked. Some judges can not even pronounce and read their questions properly with emphasis and clarity.

  22. She was truthful and that is what matters. You want her to lie? The best thing to do is give the same question for all like they used to do. Besides what if her biggest mistake was having an abortion? That is a very personal question – does she have to tell the entire world about this?

  23. In the context of all this discussion. I would like to shed some light the best I can to help Venus understand the meaning of that question no matter how too late it is because US has a harsh, challenging culture.

    The question was asked:

“what is the one big mistake that you did in your life, and what did you do to make it right?”

My daughters opinion (she is Filipina, grew up here and an intellectual) According to her, Venus’ answer could have been like this…

“When I was young and growing up, I was teased and called ugly by kids in my neighborhood. My parents were very protective of me. My mistake was I did not see my diverse background as positive because I was young. Then I worked hard as a teen at educating myself to overcome my frustration to show them that I am someday going to be accepted. Slowly my diversed background worked to my advantage and I gained confidence. And I did just that and guess what… all my hard work payed off and that is why I am here today” (educating herself and discovering her diverse background to work for her advantage is what she did “do to make it right”)

    This is humbling and human.
This is what they would have wanted to hear from her because this is her REAL platform. This was what her real life story was all about and the judges knows it.
This could be one of the many answers they waited for.

There might be some other questions that she will be asked by the people in the big wide world on her travels if she was to become the Miss Universe,
Miss Mexico will be using interpreters (she will not have a hard time finding)

    Like:
    1. What is your opinion about Gay marriages (without offending the gay community)
    2. Your opinion on abortion (without offending the pro-choice)
    3. What is your opinion about a black President (without offending Obama)
    etc, etc.
    4. Who is your famous female role model (without mentioning the Virgin Mary)

I love Ma Venus Raj. I want to think of her as our daughter. She need to have to learn a lot from Miss America and it’s OK to ask. She will teach her well because they both have Mid-Asian & Eastern genes.

Learn more about this US culture and the way they use their language not just learning to speak it. Because speaking it is not enough. They tend to describe something negative as something positive, which I think can be confusing. Like the word “Big Mistake” is not really a mistake or wrong doing but some kind of weakness.

Here is also a dictionary where young people store all the contemporary slang words.
It’s called URBAN DICTIONARY. I accidentally found this while surfing for dictionary words. Its very helpfull but sometimes offending but it’s all there!

    urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mistake&page=2

To Ma Venus Raj. Enjoy the journey. You have all the time in the world. I am in the sunset of my life and I wish I could do more. I envy your youth and beauty and I am not the only one. A lot of people admire you and you can do a lot of good for the youth because you have a gift of honesty, love and strenght, you will be going very far. Meet the right people and don’t let anyone take advantage of you or put you down.

You are very special to us.
We LOVE you and very very proud of you.
